In 1991 Police Chief Richard Taylor instituted the Community Policing plan in Hamilton Township. This plan consists of dividing the Township into four geographical areas called districts. Each district is assigned a Captain who is responsible for all police related matters within that district. This districting plan allows each Captain to be more keenly aware of the activity in this district and give appropriate attention to any concerns within their assigned district.
Each Captain is assigned a Community Police Officer (CPO) to assist in the many facets of police work. Community Policing changes the way the police think and act. Community Policing broadens the scope of policing to include not only addressing crime but, addressing the fear of crime, social disorder and neighborhood needs. It mandates that the police must form a partnership with the people in the community. Citizen input into policing results in the support and participation of the Community.
